Department of Insurance: Independent Medical Review Decisions Involving Mental Health
TThe Department of Insurance administers an independent medical review process in which third party doctors review coverage decisions by health insurers. Since 2011, reviewers have received more than 600 requests for coverage denials of mental health treatment based on medical necessity. Reviewers overturned 53 percent of mental health denials.
