The Department of Managed Health Care helps people who are having problems getting the health care services they need. Consumers can request an Independent Medical Review of coverage decisions made by their health plans. Since 2001, the department has received nearly 13,000 requests to take a second look at denials based on medical necessity. Reviewers overturned more mental health denials than any other type of medical condition or diagnosis. Reviewers found health plans improperly denied coverage of mental health services in 48 percent of all cases.
